At the end of each day we gather our things and make our way to the parking lot, where I’ve befriended the attendant, a dark-skinned woman of indeterminate ethnic origin, with a long thick braid. Being a Stranger Talker is a family trait I inherited from my grandfather, who once left us all in the car at a gas station while he went to pay, and had to be dragged back twenty minutes later, so intent was he on chatting with a pump attendant. This is the same grandfather who worked on the railroad during the Depression, and used to bring hobos home to dinner. I think Stranger Talking is a fine tradition, and it astounds me that Scott can exchange ticket and money with another person without so much as a smile or have a nice day. He mocks me for trying to make friends of everyone I meet, but I maintain that it makes life cozier to see familiar faces, and in the evening when we drive up to the window, my parking attendant grins.

“How is baby?” she asks, and I say, as always, “She’s wonderful.”
